The Day After: Why Your Pet Needs Extra Care on Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving Day is full of excitement, yummy smells, and extra attention for many pets. But the day after can bring a very different kind of energy—one that often leaves dogs and cats feeling stressed, dysregulated, or just plain confused.

Leftovers = Tummy Trouble

Even if your pet didn’t get into anything dangerous, richer food, table scraps, or extra treats from well-meaning guests can cause:

  • GI upset
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
    Keep fresh water available, maintain normal feeding routines, and avoid giving leftovers (no matter how “just a little bit” it seems).

Routines Are Out of Whack

Late nights, guests staying over, long shopping days (hello, Black Friday), and irregular walk times all disrupt your pet’s rhythm. Most dogs thrive on predictability, so the day after Thanksgiving is the perfect time to:

  • Reinforce normal potty breaks
  • Provide an enrichment walk
  • Re-establish regular feeding and sleep cues

Extra Stimulation = Extra Stress

New people, scents, noise, and changes in the home environment can leave pets mentally exhausted. A quiet day with:

  • A calming walk
  • Gentle enrichment (lick mats, sniffari walks)
  • Rest in a cozy space
    can help them decompress.
